The Story of Whithams Office Furniture: A Proud Local Legacy

Back in February 1974, Eddie Whitham and his wife Barbara spotted a gap in Tamworth.

They took a chance on an old peanut factory on Lydia Street in Tamworth NSW and transformed it into Whitham's Warehouse, offering the community high quality second-hand furniture and carpets.

From the start, Eddie had a natural ability to understand what locals needed. When he noticed the growing demand for office furniture, he brought in some second-hand pieces and they flew out the door.

By the early 80s, Whithams became the go-to destination for both, new and gently used furniture, helping locals create practical and comfortable spaces that worked for them.

In 2000, Eddie invited his son-in-law, Paul Doody, to join the family business. Paul jumped in with both feet, getting hands-on with everything from managing the books to assembling furniture, and even hitting the road to Sydney to source the best pieces for the shop. His energy and dedication helped the business grow even further.

By 2004, Eddie decided it was time to step back and handed the reins to Paul and his trusted mate, Mitch Wilson. Together, they carried on Eddie’s vision, building relationships and becoming a trusted pillar of the Tamworth community. For 15 years, Mitch and Paul made sure Whithams wasn’t just a furniture store, it was a place where people could rely on to find real solutions for their spaces.

Fast forward to today, Whithams Office Furniture is still proudly serving Tamworth and beyond.

During the years leading up to this milestone, Mitch and Paul recognised that Whithams needed to evolve in response to a changing market. Second-hand furniture was no longer meeting the demands of their customers or supporting the growth of the business. Gradually, pre-owned items were phased out, and the focus shifted fully toward offering new, high-quality office furniture.

This evolution in direction was solidified with a fresh new identity, Whithams Warehouse officially became Whithams Office Furniture, reflecting both the company’s growth and its commitment to meeting modern workplace needs.

In 2023, with Mitch retiring, Paul took the lead of the newly incorporated business. Whithams continues to grow, reaching across Australia with local installations more than five hours from Tamworth and deliveries nationwide, proving that a business built on heart, quality, and adaptability can go the distance.
